Description: Caption reads; "The Treaty of Greeneville Pipe is the historic calumet which was solemnly smoked by General Anthony "Mad" Wayne, his staff officers and ninety Indian chiefs. The Greeneville Treaty (1795) was never broken, for the Indians considered the calumet ceremony as the most solemn and binding of pledges. With this treaty, Indian warfare in Ohio was practically at a close and the gates were open to civilization. This pipe may be seen in the Ohio State Museum in Columbus." View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Line drawing of the principle figures in the painting "The Signing of the Treaty of Greene Ville" (1945) by Howard Chandler Christy. Each figure is numbered and the name of the individual is listed. On August 3, 1795, leaders of the Wyandot, the Delaware, the Shawnee, the Ottawa, the Miami, the Eel River, the Wea, the Chippewa, the Potawatomi, the Kickapoo, the Piankashaw, and the Kaskaskia tribes formally signed a treaty with Anthony Wayne and the American army. The natives agreed to relinquish all claims to land south and east of a boundary that began roughly at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, while the whites agreed to relinquish their claims to land north and west of the line, although the natives permitted the Americans to establish several trading posts in their territory. The United States also provided the Indians with $20,000 worth of goods for signing the treaty. The American government also agreed to give the natives $9,500 every year in goods. The painting shows Little Turtle, a Miami Chief, presenting a ceremonial wampum belt to Anthony Wayne. The belt is on display at the Ohio Historical Society. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: A map of Ohio Indian village sites and trails, done by H.C. Shetrone and R.B. Sherman of the Ohio Historical Society. Also included on the map are American and European posts, the Greenville Treaty line, and notations for whether an Indian town was associated with the Delaware, Wyandot, Shawnee or Miami tribe. A chronology printed on either side of the map covers Ohio's history and settlement, as well as interactions between American Indians and settlers, from 1669 until 1842. Shetrone was Curator of Archaeology for the Ohio Historical Society between 1921 and 1928 and served as the Society's director from 1928 until 1947. View on Ohio Memory.
